Ella Doran began her career as a young designer with no experience in commercial product design. The catalyst for her developing business was found during the studio sale of her textiles, where she sold out of photographic coasters, which were produced using images from a recent trip abroad. From then on in, Ella began to revolutionize the design of products that had been overlooked for years. Tablemats, coasters, roller blinds and tableware all became blank canvases for her innovative use of photographs, featuring themes from nature and the world around us.
Having received a Prince’s Trust loan in 1996, Ella showed her first range of tablemats at the UK trade show ‘Top Drawer’, where she won “Highly Commended Best New Product” for her ‘stones’ collection, a design which set the scene for photographic imagery onto home ware products from then on in.

Within a few years Ella was designing under license for UK tableware manufacturer Portmeirion and tablemat manufacturer Jason, creating ranges of tableware and accessories, which sold globally, further establishing the Ella Doran brand with new purchasers and distribution channels. The following years saw Ella’s creative work continue to develop with a series of product ranges including: bathroom accessories; stationery; storage; kitchen and outdoor picnic ware.
Today her bespoke blinds are snapped up by the most discerning clients, and future collections are planned for repeat fabrics and wall coverings. 2005 saw the launch of her first shop-front office on Cheshire Street, East London, and the online shopping site.
While other professional commitments saw Ella becoming a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2006 and her role as an external examiner and judge for new designers has seen her on a number of committees and boards including Middlesex University where she herself graduated in printed textiles.

Exhibition and commission work has led to the production of two children’s books, along with associated giftware ranges, for Tate Enterprises, as well as a range of products for London Transport on their ‘All Zones – Routemaster Rocks’, which celebrates the iconic Red London bus.

Ella has continued to attract accolades throughout her career from local business awards, to her recent “Most Influential Designer” award from her peers at Hidden Art, a London based organization that works with many of the UK’s top product designers. Her partnership with John Lewis, and the continued success of her product designs, has already resulted in her winning the Laurent Perrier Eureka 2006 award, as well as being nominated for ‘Best Creative Talent in the Annual 2007 Walpole Awards for luxury brands.
This year sees Ella as one of the lead designers for the Liverpool Design Show as a legacy event for the city’s Capital of Culture 2008.
