Design Ventura
Design Ventura is the Design Museum’s flagship design and enterprise competition for secondary school students in years 9, 10 and 11. Over 13,000 students from 265 across the UK and beyond are registered to take part in 2018, the ninth year of the competition.
The young people are challenged to work in teams design a new product for the Design Museum Shop, responding to a detailed brief. The winning team will work with creative professionals to develop and manufacture their idea and will see it on sale in the Design Museum Shop, with all profits donated to a charity of their choice.
Ella has been invited to help choose the top ten Student teams for Design Ventura this year. The shortlisting involves choosing the top ten ideas from submitted entries and these teams will then be invited to pitch their ideas to a panel of expert judges at the Design Museum in December.
The project is supported by industry experts from the creative industries and business and offers students the chance to develop creative, design thinking, enterprise and transferrable employability skills.
Here’s this year’s brief for the Students given by the lovely Donna Wilson.

from sheep to seat, fleece to floor at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
From Sheep to Seat, Fleece to Floor follows the journey of sheep wool, from shearing to scouring, design to spinning, to create an exhibition of beautiful bespoke furniture, furnishings and photographic prints, all of which are available to buy. An homage to local products, suppliers and processes, the exhibition highlights the importance of the circular economy in reducing waste and sustaining livelihoods and traditions.
Following a residency at the Park in 2016, which culminated in new product ranges for YSP Shop, Doran worked with the Park’s neighbouring farmer to amass wool from the sheep that reside in the Country Park. After scouring by Haworth Scouring, the wool was transformed by British manufacturers, Camira and Alternative Flooring, and features Doran’s Waterlake design, a distinctive and colourful pattern which mirrors the movement of the lakes and plant life at YSP. The exhibition is accompanied by a short film by Paul Wyatt.
Both British Wool and Campaign for Wool are our project sponsors, along side Camira Fabrics and Alternative Flooring, follow Ella’s journey on instagram @elladorandesigner, as she develops the work, and visit this website for updates and information for the exhibition opening 15th June 2019.

Ella Doran is one of the established designers that forms part of 100% Forward at 100% Design, which will highlight UK emerging design talents, each championed by an established designer who launched their career at 100% Design.
Says Barbara Chandler: “Since 100% Design started in 1995, our stellar UK designers have created a world-famous design industry, and continue to do so. But all industries need new talent. Who better to spot it than the successful design entrepreneurs who launched their careers in the ‘90s at 100% Design? Seven of them have each chosen an emerging UK designer. I have chosen an eighth and added a display of ceramics.
The creativity of these new designers embraces furniture, lighting, printed/woven textiles and ceramics…not to mention origami and illuminated wallpaper. Some designers have just graduated; others are already making their way. They will be given a platform at 100% Design to show their work and engage with visitors. Their stories will inform, intrigue, inspire and impress.”

Ella has nominated Kyla McCullum, of Foldability
Ella Doran says:
“I first met Kyla at Design Junction in 2013. I was struck by her display of folded and pleated papers, which seemed to echo in 3D form a similar source of inspiration to my own ‘Geo’ design. I have watched her develop and progress over the past few years, pushing the boundaries of her craft to great effect.
Her hallmark is that wow factor.”

Leading textile company Camira previewed Ella Doran's exciting new ‘Waterlake’ fabric design at Clerkenwell Design Week 2018. Ella created the design for her client the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP). Due to launch in 2019, ‘Waterlake’ will feature as part of Ella Doran’s YSP exhibition ‘From Sheep to Seat’ and will be used to upholster a piece of furniture created entirely from materials sourced at the Park. The chair’s wooden elements will originate from YSP’s trees, whilst the wool used to create the fabric is taken from the sheep that live at the Park. Camira will be weaving the fabric at their local Yorkshire facilities for the exhibition and the first sample jacquard textile was on display during Clerkenwell Design Week CDW18!

YSP collection 2017
We are very excited to announce that the Yorkshire Sculpture Park have launched a whole collection of new homewares designed by Ella to celebrate their 40th anniversary of ‘Art without Walls’.
Ella Doran is delighted to announce that the Yorkshire Sculpture Park has commissioned two major homewares collections to celebrate the iconic Park’s 40th anniversary of ‘Art without Walls’. Ella visited YSP throughout the seasons, documenting every aspect through sketched impressions and photography to create two unique ranges inspired by the Park’s 500-acre landscape. ’Through the Camera Lens’ includes photographs of the 18th-century historic landscape – including a canopy of leaves and tactile tree bark – applied to a tea towel, tote bag, apron, cushion, trays and mugs, whilst ‘Brushstrokes’ is a distinctive textile design, mirroring the movement of the lakes and plant life growth at YSP. The ‘Brushstrokes’ palette is inspired by the colours of YSP, including Stone Wall Chapel, Autumn Leaf and Maple Leaf with Sunlight.
