The Aesthetics & Pattern of Aroma

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
What does an aroma look like to you?

Rarely, do we acknowledge our most primordial sense – that of smell – though its effects our psyche have long been recognised as powerful.

In this one-day workshop, we bring together the worlds of design and aromatherapy, exploring the links between olfaction and our visual creativity. Using essential oils, we discover four fundamental Fragrance Families (Woody, Floral, Fruity & Oriental) and some aromas belonging to them. In exploring the aromas you connect with, you will create a personal colour palette from which to make a watercolour painting, guided by Ella Doran. Ella will guide you on aspects of your composition, such as narrative, colour, emotion, editing and mark-making, investigating how these more formal concerns contribute to the strength of an image. You will end your day with an artwork, drawn from your imagination, to take home along with your personalised aromatic blend.

About Allesandra

The Aromatherapy workshop is run by certified massage aromatherapist, Alessandra McAllister. Originally inspired by the literature of olfaction, from Proust to Joyce, Alessandra began observing the effects of aroma on her own imagination, memory and emotions to form a strong belief in their power to help us better connect with ourselves.

As well as running her practice, Alessandra is a mental health and wellbeing practitioner, creating NHS-funded workshops for people in recovery from depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders. She is currently based in Bristol. Instagram: @alessandramcallistersensory
